Lincolnia/Haywood Glen

Lincolnia/Heywood Glen

Originally the land west of Alexandria was populated by Indians who hunted game. In 1750, John Summers built a house later called Coolege Farm west of what is now Lincolnia.  It was a summer cottage that remains today.  Little River Turnpike was the first toll road in America and served to bring produce to the Alexandria docks from the Lincolnia area.  As early as 1853, the area was called Mt. Pierce and later, Lebanon.  Old Lincolnia Road linked Annandale and Alexandria along wooden bridges and farm properties. There were 5166 households in an area of 2.9 square miles.  In 1870, the area was named Lincolnia honoring President Lincoln. Streets in the community were named after Confederate Generals such as Beauregard, Pickett, Pegram and Van Dorn.

In the mid ‘50’s, builder Broyhill and Sons built single family homes in Lincolnia in a variety of styles to meet the post war baby boom. It was not a planned community but homes had similar innovative amenities such as built in fire detection systems, bomb shelters and electronic thermostats.  Two level homes cost $22,500, split levels $21,800, ramblers $21,850 and center hall Colonials $22,050.  In 1958, hundreds of Cherry Trees were planted.

In 1970 only a few muddy roads linked neighborhoods and 100 homes were built surrounded on one side by woods.  Homes in the first section had four bedrooms, a dining room, rec room, fireplace, kitchen laundry room and a garage or carport.  By 1971, homes with basements were selling for $53,400.
